John is a partner in the firm’s corporate services group in Exeter. Maintaining an audit registration and specialising in advisory services to SME businesses, including corporate finance, the preparation of business plans, buy-out reports and specialist audit work, John is also part of the firm’s litigation support team providing expert testimony for cases involving business appraisals and valuations, or professional negligence. He has acted as a single joint expert in numerous matrimonial cases and has given evidence in court under cross-examination. He is also an authorised individual for non-contentious probate work.
An economics graduate from Cambridge University, John joined the firm in 1987 as an audit manager after training with Big 4 firm, Deloitte Haskins + Sells, in London and gaining valuable experience in the SME sector at their Croydon office. Promoted to partner in 1990, John is also the finance partner on the firm’s management board.
He is a member of the ICAEW's national Technical Advisory Committee and has sat on working parties examining the Reporting Framework for Small Companies and the accounting requirements for Limited Liability Partnerships. From 2005 onwards he sat on CASE, the sub-committee of the UK Accounting Standards Board that dealt with the UK FRSSE and other accounting issues for SMEs. He is now a member of the Financial Reporting Council's UK GAAP Technical Advisory Group and is the firm’s representative on CharterGroup’s Charities Business Development Group, with a special interest in the education sector.

John’s community involvement has included 8 years as a Board Member of the Governing Body of Exeter College. He was a director of A Plus Training (SW) Ltd when it was operated by the college as a separate subsidiary and is currently a co-opted member on the College's Audit Committee. He was also Finance Director at Exeter Golf and Country Club Limited for 11 years from 2005 to March 2016. He is both a past Chairman and past President of Exeter Round Table. His sporting interests include golf, rugby, football, cricket and horse racing, where he has specific knowledge and personal experience of horse-owning partnerships, notably their accounting, VAT and practical issues. His lifelong support of Leicester City and Leicester Tigers has provided some interesting events in recent seasons!
