Barnstaple’s 8th annual Really Big Quiz, has raised a record-breaking £4,000 for the Mayor of Barnstaple’s charities of the year, beating the previous record by £364.
The quiz, held in aid of Clarity, The North Devon Cancer and Wellbeing Appeal, and ChemoHero, saw a packed hall of 37 teams fight it out for the title of Barnstaple and North Devon’s brainiest business/quiz team.
Added to the previous seven years of fundraising activity, it brings the total raised by the Really Big Quiz to more than £24,000, all of which has gone directly to support the Mayor’s chosen charities each year.
Teams from across North Devon enjoyed a testing evening of questions delivered by Simpkins Edwards’ very own quiz masters: Partner, Jilly Watson, and Director of Business Services, James Welton.
At the interval, the ever exuberant and entertaining James Morrish of Kivells held a rapid-fire auction with the top item for the night – a Dartington Glass whisky decanter and two whisky glasses, engraved with the Barnstaple crest – going for the princely sum of £130.
Hundreds rose to their feet as Mr Morrish encouraged team members to pay an extra £1 to participate in the annual Heads or Tails event, where participants choose to put their hands on their heads or on their bottoms to indicate if they think the coin will land on heads or tails. It took seven rounds to whittle down this year’s winner to Janet Powell, from The Wright Way Coaching Ltd, who took home a bottle of fizz. This, together with the auction, raffle and money raised from entry fees, helped raise £4,000, including £666 generated by the raffle.
‘Polly Peachum’s Ensemble’ emerged as the champion team on the night, taking home the Simpkins Edwards’ Really Big Quiz trophy. It was a close-run battle, with ‘Acolytes’ (previous winners in 2012) coming second, and ‘4 Completions and a Tribunal’, from Toller Beattie LLP, third.
Commenting on the success of the event Jilly Watson, Partner at Simpkins Edwards, said: “This year’s Really Big Quiz was full of testing brain teasers, fun, and frantic bidding for a host of outstanding auction items, ranging from a bespoke item of jewellery donated by James Bishop Jewellery, to VIP tickets the Barnstaple Fair ceremony. Combined with a host of other auction items generously donated by local businesses and individuals, we were able to raise a phenomenal amount for the Mayor’s three chosen charities; Clarity, The North Devon Cancer and Wellbeing Appeal, and ChemoHero.
The Mayor of Barnstaple, Cllr Julie Hunt, added: “I would like to thank all those who took part in The Really Big Quiz, for their ongoing support of this key fundraising event in the North Devon and Barnstaple business calendar. It was a fantastic evening, we had a wonderful turnout, and we raised thousands of pounds for three very worthy charities.”
Cllr Hunt added: “My thanks go to Simpkins Edwards, who once again organised a fantastic evening, to Luke Flynn, who took pictures at the event, and to representatives of my charities who sold raffle tickets and enabled the smooth running of the event. Their help plays a key part in making the quiz a huge success and an enjoyable evening for all involved.”
