About Us

Who we are

Simpkins Edwards is a multi-service accountancy firm founded by John Simpkins and Gordon Edwards in 1968. We provide a range of tax, accountancy and business services that suit the diverse needs of businesses and individuals across the South West. Through our support and expert guidance, we aim to give you back the time, resources and confidence to concentrate on the things that matter most.

Our people are our most important assets and we invest in ensuring that our employees are happy, well trained and supported in achieving their ambitions within the firm and their careers.

In 2023, we were proud to be a finalist in the Community Impact category at the Xero Awards, and Highly Commended for Employer of the Year (Medium) at the Exeter College Apprentice & Employer Awards.

Our impact on our local communities and the environment are a primary consideration in everything we do. We have taken several steps designed to make it easier for our people to do as much as they can.

These include:

  • Installation of showers and the allocation of bike storage space to encourage employees to run or cycle to work.

  • We have invested in a paperless office system to substantially reduce the use of paper throughout our offices.

  • We work with like-minded partners and were the first customer of BINIT – an innovative recycling provider based in Devon, to ensure that we recycle everything possible.

  • We hold a Gold Corporate Covenant Award under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme reflecting that we demonstrate and advocate support to the Armed Forces community.

  • We have introduced paid volunteering days to encourage our employees to support a local group or charity. Our volunteering days are fantastic for developing our teams outside of our normal working environment and it is rewarding experience to contribute in a meaningful way to our local communities.

  • Our annual fundraising “Really Big Quiz” nights in Exeter and Barnstaple have been running since 2004 with proceeds going to the chosen charities of the Lord Mayors of Exeter and Barnstaple.

We are members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales and are fully licensed for all aspects of non-contentious probate work. Full details can be found here.

Key diversity statistics

(as at 31 March 2023)

During March 2023 we asked all our partners and staff to complete, anonymously, a diversity survey. As it was non-mandatory, the results may not be a complete representation of the firm’s profile but 85% of the 114 people who were sent the survey did respond.
